Ernesto Oeschger is not only a committed specialist in early art, but is also a freelance artist. He began earning his living as a goldsmith and sculptor, working in and around Basel, Switzerland. Several stone and steel sculptures can be found in public places. He has also shown his work at many international exhibitions. Very early on, he found his way to abstract art.
In 1970, he acquired a “rustico”, an old Tessin house, in Intragna, which he renovated himself. What was originally just meant to be a summer domicile became his permanent home after his atelier in Basel was demolished. He then moved his atelier from Basel to Intragna where he now lives and works. His sculptures are defined by their relationship to space and environment, which in turn activates and dictates his work. For the “Art Hiking Trail” in the Verzasca Valley, Switzerland, he created an open cube, which draws in and includes the landscape.
Standing in the sculpture for an open air exhibition in Roveredo, Switzerland, visitors find themselves and the surrounding nature mirrored from unusual angles and feel themselves part of the landscape. For the International Year of Mountains 2002, sculpture became action. He created “Cubo Blu”, a moving blue cube on the Alzasca Lake, Val Onsernone, Switzerland. Essential to both Ernesto Oeschger’s installations and his research into Petroglyphs is the binding of the spiritual with the material.
